Senior Night and a Friday Night provided HawkNation and the visiting Oakdale fans a great game with plenty of excitement at Urbana, as both teams closed out their regular seasons. There was even a little buzz in the stands as people wondered if Hawks star Cully Loun, seen dunking in warmups, might play and be a difference-maker. Nah, only a tease. 🙂
If you only focus on the box score, it mirrors the ups and downs the Hawks have experienced all season long, low quarter, high quarter, low quarter, high quarter. A roller coaster each game would be easiest way to assess it. This game, however, ignore the box score. This one was nip and tuck throughout, full of runs, key stretches and moments that would have huge impacts on the game and end result.
Urbana would get off to a slower start offensively, JayZee seemingly playing the entire half from beyond the arc and not finding his range. With that size missing down low, Oakdale would hold an edge in the rebounds department, as UHS would often only get one shot off. A couple of 3s by Mario and Ezekiel would keep Urbana close, down 14-8 at the end of 1.
The 2nd quarter Reese Prahl loaded up and fired off a pair of 3s, joined by Gabe, Shishir and Justin, who all combined for 15 Hawks points to the 16 by the Bears.
Key stretch #1 occurred with Urbana down 19-10, and Oakdale preparing to run away with it. The boys would respond with an 11-0 run, taking their brief and only lead at 21-19!
Key stretch #2 would see the Hawks give it right back, Oakdale now going on an 11-0 streak! Agony!
Early in the second half, Urbana would once again cut into the lead and the crowd was loud and getting into it! Only down 34-30, key stretch #3 would see Urbana turn over the ball on 6 consecutive possessions! 40-30 Oakdale to end the 3rd quarter.
Did Urbana have anything left in the tank?
The Hawks once again ran down the Bears, getting to within 50-46, and 52-48 with plenty of time left. Drew connected on a pair from downtown, as did Mario and Reese! Unfortunately, Urbana would have 3 more turnovers in their final 5 possessions to end the game. Oakdale 56 Urbana 48.
Nonetheless, great high school basketball for everyone! Urbana will be looking for their Maryland State playoff seed soon, and are likely to face a strong team to open, but HawkNation will be there to root the boys on!
