Volleyball matches seem like a series of runs, of the 2-1, 3-1, or 4-1 variety. In tonight’s regional playoff matchup at Urbana High School, the Hawks collected several more of these runs than Richard Montgomery did, and Urbana swept the Rockets in 3 sets to advance to the next round of the MPSSAA State Playoffs.
The top-seeded Hawks opened the match on a 6-1 run behind the serves of Tatiana Johnson. UHS maintained a healthy lead in set 1 at 14-8 before RMHS enjoyed a run of their own to cut it down to 15-13, forcing coach to call for a timeout. The Rockets eventually tied the set at 18-18, before Urbana closed it out on a 7-2 run, including the final 3 points on the serve of Natasha White. 1-0 UHS
Set #2 started off in favor of RMHS, as they took a 7-5 lead. Then Urbana unleashed the power of Trinity Burge, who displayed a “wicked” serve to turn the match around with a 4-1 run and gain a lead at 9-8. A few minutes later, and another 3-1 run with Sophia Bongiomo serving at the helm, Urbana was ahead 13-9. UHS got to 19-12 behind amazing team play in front of the net, including perfect sets, saves, spikes and surprise lobs by the likes of Tera Sackey, Zoe Assassie, Makala Thompson and Penelope Hiepler. The crowd was blown away by the play and athleticism of these Hawks, as they wrapped up the set at 25-16. 2-0 UHS.
Set#3 provided more of the same, including brilliant saves to keep play alive. The Hawks made sure the tiring Rockets didn’t get any ideas of extending the match, and took set 3 at 25-17, calling it a night.
Job well done ladies!
